From what I have seen and experienced, people tend to use this phrase in either of these two situations; when you made a mistake you can't correct or you want something that you won't get after going through a whole lot of stress. This evening, I found myself in the first situation; where as I can't turn back the hand of time, I have learnt from my mistakes. If wishes came though, I will be richer than Mark Zuckerberg and happy as a baby.
It has also come to my observation that people are more wishful than being hopeful; when you pass through a difficult situation, all you can do is move on. I have resolved to be hopeful than wishful, its simply really, hope gives you strength, determination to face whatever uncertainty ahead.
I cannot speak for others or imagine what cirumstances they must have passed through, what I can say is that with hope you have the power to change things for yourself.
Coming to live with what is, is my new mantra.
